Community Garden Project at Yardley Hastings

The gardens at Oakfield in Yardley Hastings have been enjoyed over many years. Prior to Oakfield taking over the building we recognised that the vast grounds could and would be a space to share with the local community. In 2020 the garden was transformed through the help of Trusts and Foundations and local people sharing the vision to make a communal space for all to enjoy and share.

Achievements:

  • Created a Gardening Club with the local primary school
  • Small orchard
  • Vegetable Patches
  • Picnic Benches
  • Peace Garden – Quiet space with water fountain and seating.
  • Bird tables and foliage to encourage the wildlife
  • Paths for disabled access
  • Created a space for the local community to enjoy
  • Team of volunteers working on the upkeep of the area
  • Bringing the community together

We have established clubs, support from volunteers, and in 2022 extended the space creating a wider experience for more people and more activities.

We have:

·       Continued the wheelchair accessible path to allow those with limited mobility to be able to enjoy the area.

·       Installed a nature zone for the people we support and the school pupils to experience.

·       Added more car parking spaces as we continue to have more activity.

·       Made the fire pit safe and accessible.

·       Added more picnic type tables with facilities for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility.

The local community has been actively involved in the consultation of what the space should be used for and once the project is completed it will be used to enhance the potential learning for both the people we support, residents and children from the local primary school.

Our aim is to increase the usable area and footfall of the community, to be used as a catalyst for building relationships with our neighbours.  Yardley Hastings is a small rural community; it is important that everyone accepts each other and finds common ground to build relationships. The community garden has been a great resource for many of the local community. Increasing the garden for all to use and enjoy will assist with the local community coming and working together.

The Community Garden Project enables individual residents to learn and develop their skills in social interaction, communicating with members of the public and raising their self-esteem and confidence to be more active members of the village community.

In turn the local community will experience that although our residents may have a physical or learning disability, they are still able to participate in a wide range of activities, and, by working together we shall be providing a diverse and accepting place for all.
