Seed-to-Plate Project

Oakfield Community's Seed-to-Plate Project is a hands-on opportunity for people with learning disabilities to learn about where our fruit and vegetables come from, how they are grown and how to harvest and use the end product.

Our Easton Maudit site provides the perfect setting to develop our Seed-to-Plate project. Set in just over two acres of ground, in the heart of the countryside, we have two poly tunnels, a greenhouse and a number of raised beds.

As part of the seed-to-plate project, we will be incorporating nature-based activities, to include wood craft (bird boxes, insect hotels), wildlife awareness and habitat creation (ponds, tree planting).

The project has been be developed to encourage participation by all. Sessions are person-centred, with the chance to work towards different levels of achievement to gain an accreditation from Oakfield for all their hard work. All participants will receive a portfolio to document their achievements.

Testimonials for the Seed-to-Plate Project from Cath, our Care Farm Manager...

"Justin likes making things out of wood, hammering in nails, sawing, sanding and painting. He does not like the planting-side of things so much."

"Billy is always excited and eager on the morning of attending the STP session. Billy spins a lot but this seems to have calmed and he does this minimally during the session. He loves doing things. He especially loves hammering in nails and will even use the drill unaided. He likes to see the end result of his work.

He also seems to enjoy planting seeds and bulbs, and the feel of the compost.

He doesn’t always want to leave when the session is over."
