What having my own flat means to me...

Post written by Jess Webb in November 2023.

There is an on-going building programme to update and improve our accommodation at Easton Maudit. During 2021-2025 there is extensive building plan to ensure the highest standards for everyone residing at Easton Maudit. This plan will incorporate the new way of thinking; a push from residential care to supported living. This redevelopment aims to build 16 new supported living accommodation areas for the people we support, giving them the option to stay at Easton Maudit should they wish to. In 2023, phase two of the project was complete and three new flats were built ready for the people we support to move in.

In May 2023, three of the people we support moved-in to their new flats. This was a day to remember for the Oakfield team.

How has moving to Supported Living impacted the people we support who moved in during May 2023?

Testimonials from Keyworkers

"Change was a big thing for Eddie, at first he didn't seem to be settled, it took him a while to settle. But when he had settled he has come on so much with his own independence, a lot more happy in himself. He has been doing so much more for himself like putting his washing on, making his bed and doing his lunches whilst being assisted.

Eddie seems so settled that he likes spending time in his flat on his own. Eddie likes his dining table because he likes looking outside whilst having his breakfast. Eddie has got himself into a routine and he seems to like it, he is just all over very happy."

"Nanda has said to staff about how she is enjoying being in her new flat, she is enjoying the independence of writing her shopping lists and going with staff to get her food. She always invites the people we support or staff to have dinner with her. She enjoys buying things to go in her flat.

Nanda has become a lot more independent since moving into her new flat and has so much more room.

She seems a lot happier and content since moving into her new flat."

"He feels that he appreciates his space more. Gary seems to take more pride in his new flat. Gary has enjoyed inviting his friends round to his flat for a cup of tea. Gary has enjoyed purchasing things for his new flat like his pictures and a record player. He enjoys supported living - doing his own washing and trying new things for lunch. Gary has also enjoyed food shopping and his click & collect. His flat has allowed him to be more independent, and have more pride in his own belongings and appearance. He gets very excited talking about things like his food shopping and cooking. It has had a massive impact on Gary and shows that he can do a lot for himself. It has allowed him to reach his full potential."

There have been many proven benefits to the people we support by moving to supported living, such as:

  • Becoming more empowered
  • Having more independence and developing life skills
  • An option for privacy when choosing to be alone, whilst also remaining within the community
  • Further financial control over their monies
  • More long-term stability of accommodation, due to tenancy agreement with Oakfield

And many more.

As part of Oakfield Community's mission, we strive to "develop individuals to reach their full potential and live as independently as possible." Phase two of the Easton Maudit renovation has been a main factor in allowing this to happen. Oakfield Community continues to fundraise for the succeeding phases of the renovation project, allowing more of people we support to move into supported living, and progress in reaching their full potential.
